Aaron Sorkin may be a prolific screenwriter but to date, his most popular work continues to be 2010’s The Social Network. The David Fincher-directed flick was adapted by Sorkin from the novel The Accidental Billionaires and details the early days of Facebook’s founding.

Well over a decade later, Sorkin says he’s working on a screenplay that could serve as the sequel to The Social Network.

Speaking on a recent episode of The Town podcast, Sorkin revealed that he’s writing about how Facebook has influenced politics and democracy, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Asking if he was writing about the concept specifically in the form of a screenplay, Sorkin replied that he’s “trying.”

“Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement,” he said. “That is what will get you to — what they call inside the hallways of Facebook — ‘the infinite scroll’ …”

“There’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t. There’s just growth,” he continued.

Sources close to Sorkin confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the screenwriter is working on a “Social Network-adjacent screenplay” but noted that the project is in its early stages and doesn’t have a studio on board just yet.

The Social Network starred Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg alongside a supporting cast of Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Armie Hammer, Tyler Winklevoss and Max Minghella. The film went on to gross well over $200 million USD, becoming a major commercial and critical success.
