Hollywood and Highland is notoriously crowded no matter the time or day. But during the run-up to the Oscars, it’s extra busy for obvious reasons. This year, however, proved to be extra rampant as roughly 1,000 pro-Palestine activists obstructed the lead into the award ceremony to call attention to the humanitarian crisis caused by the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. On the red carpet, a number of celebrities echoed the cries of the protestors in the form of a small red pin to show their solidarity.

Amongst them, Billie Eilish, comedian and actor Ramy Youssef, director Ava DuVernay and Poor Things star Mark Ruffalo were seen with the red pin, which depicts a black heart in the middle of a hand. “We’re all calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. We’re calling for the safety of everyone involved,” said Youssef during an interview. “We really want lasting justice and peace for the Palestinian people. We really just want to say, ‘let’s just stop killing children.’ There’s so much there to process and it feels like the easiest way to have the conversations that people want to have is when there isn’t an active bombing campaign happening.”

The initiative was started by Artists4Ceasefire, a nonprofit group supported by hundreds of entertainment industry professionals, including Drake, Dua Lipa, Jordan Peele, Riz Ahmed and more. The red pins were also previously seen during last week’s Grammy’s, as well as at the Screen Actors Guild awards.
