Chamar Studio’s Innovative Flap Chair Is Crafted From Upcycled Rubber
As part of æquō’s showcase lineup at Design Miami 2024.
The Flap Chair by Chamar Studio is an intriguing piece that captured the attention of visitors and celebrity guests at this year’s Design Miami.
In collaboration with æquō, Chamar’s founder, Sudheer Rajbhar, sought inspiration from fashion and garment construction details. Working closely with the Dalit community in Dharavi, Rajbhar has transformed reclaimed rubber into a durable alternative to leather. His innovative process incorporates compressed mesh and pigments between rubber sheets, creating a new material that symbolizes strength and resilience for the Dalit community.
Measuring 135 cm in length, 160 cm in width with a height of 78 cm, the Flap Chair arrives in a bold vermillion color palette while its sculptural form embodies elements that are reminiscent of a soft-leather flap bag.
In addition, the studio also produced other furniture pieces with its recycled rubber material. This includes the Pocket Chair in cobalt blue, the teal green Baldric Chair as well as the Woven Light lampshade — a body of work that perfectly showcases the studio’s creative, upcycling approach centering on rubber and leather.
The aforementioned pieces by Chamar Studio are also part of a wider collection for æquō, entitled “RUB IN.” The collection comprises numerous collaborative pieces from designers around the world. This includes Destroyers/Builders’ founder Linde Freya Tangelder, Frédéric Imbert, Florence Louisy, Valériane Lazard as well as Ateliers Courtin’s founder, Cédric Courtin.
