Step Inside Some of the Most Impressive Italian Houses in This New Book
“Italian Interiors” sees writer Laura May Todd document the breadth of the country’s home decoration styles.
Italy might be synonymous with good food, but it’s equally famous for its good design. Revered the world over, Italian design history has produced some of the most iconic pieces of all time, along with a wealth of designers and architects who have gone on to become some of the greats.
Now, this inherent sense of “good design” is captured through a new book titled “Italian Interiors”, which surveys 50 homes, from historic palace buildings to mid-century city apartments.
Penned by Milan-based writer Laura May Todd and published by Phaidon, the book offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the domestic spaces of some of the country’s best-known designers, architects, and even filmmakers.
Across the 272 pages, residences owned by the likes of Carlo Scarpa, Alessandro Mendini, and Luca Guadagnino are profiled through short project descriptions and photography. Todd, who writes for Wallpaper*, the New York Times Style Magazine, and Architectural Digest, has also penned an introductory essay, in which she explores her own thoughts about what makes an Italian house feel truly “Italian”.
“With styles ranging from historic to contemporary and minimalist to maximalist, some of the interiors are true hidden gems, having never before appeared in print,” Phaidon says, adding that the design of the book itself – which comes in large format and features an acetate jacket – is intended to evoke the “country’s eclectic, elegant style”.
Italian Interiors is on sale at the Phaidon web store now and is priced at £49.95 GBP or $69.95 USD.
