Lady Gaga Makes Long-Awaited Return to Pop Music with "Disease"
A dark electro-pop banger reminiscent of her early pop records.
Lady Gaga‘s “little monsters” can now breathe a big sigh of relief as she makes her long-awaited return to pop music. In preparation for the release of her seventh studio album, Lady Gaga has dropped her much-anticipated lead single “Disease.”
While Gaga has remained in the spotlight, acting in major film features, playing her Las Vegas jazz residency and producing special cinematic soundtracks, the single marks the artist’s first true pop single in four years. In “Disease” the artist reprises the dark electro-pop style, reminiscent of earlier projects like The Fame Monster (2009) and Born This Way (2011), with four-on-the-floor beats and grinding synths.
Gaga lets out a raspy belt for the hook, proclaiming “I could play the doctor, I can cure your disease.” The distorted stylization is a departure from the polished vocal tracks of her last pop LP “Chromatica (2020),” which adopted a pink-hued alienesque aesthetic. The album art reflects this shift in tone, depicting Gaga very much on earth, sprawled on the hood of a moving car with “DISEASE” painted onto the asphalt.
Off the heels of the Joker: Folie à Deux release in early October, the multi-hyphenate artist shows no signs of stopping as she begins the roll-out for her next LP tentatively dubbed by fans as “LG7.” While an official release date has not been announced, the album is rumored to drop in early 2025.
