TRUNK has opened its third hotel in the heart of Tokyo. Situated in the tranquil Yoyogi Park that’s tucked in the hustle and bustle of Shibuya, the boutique hotel is designed to complement the laidback, yet sophisticated spirit of the neighborhood.

Stretching 1499m2, TRUNK(HOTEL) YOYOGI PARK harmoniously integrates with the city’s largest green spaces. Spanning five floors, the 20 individual guest rooms and 5 suites are all fitted with a balcony, where guests can look over the gorgeous neighborhood or immerse themselves in the park’s serene scenery. A notable feature of these balconies is its slanted ceilings, a thoughtfully incorporated design that ensures as much natural light is directed into the rooms.

Helping bring the hotel to life is Tokyo-based architecture and interior design firm, Keiji Ashizawa Design. Speaking on the project, founder and architect, Keiji Ashizawa explained that “The DNA of the two neighboring districts, Tomigaya and Shibuya is present throughout, their contrasts and harmonies celebrated in a way we hope will cultivate a new culture, unique to TRUNK(HOTEL) YOYOGI PARK.”

Norm Architects, a Copenhagen-based studio also contributed to the hotel’s interior design, which also signified TRUNK’s first time collaborating with an international team for design work. Frederik Alexander Werner of Norm Architects pointed out the shared attention to detail, refinement, functionality, and tendency for simplicity between Scandinavian and traditional Japanese designs. “There is a respect regarding the use of natural materials in design and architecture, a fondness of muted color palettes, and a humble approach to expressivity through genuine craftsmanship,” added Werner.

Without a doubt, the TRUNK(HOTEL) YOYOGI PARK is just as Werner described — from exterior to interior, every aspect of the hotel interplay rawness and refinement, softness with hardness, as well as traditional elements and contemporary touches. A prime example of this balance is demonstrated in the hotel’s Brutalist structure, where it’s softened with wooden louvres and delicate greenery.
