Liberty Lends its Patterns to HAY's "Matin" Lamp
Bringing a distinctly British edge to the Inga Sempé-designed object.

HAY has swapped block colors for bold patterns in this collaboration with Liberty. Splashed across the shades of the Matin lamp, the new pieces celebrate the legacy of the London-based store and its iconic floral fabrics.
The Matin lamp, originally designed by French designer Inga Sempé back in 2019, is one of HAY’s most successful products. Its simple construction renders it timeless – the pleated shade sits atop of a steel-wire frame crafted from polished brass.
Now, the Scandinavian super brand joins forces with Liberty to offer a new perspective on the design, which until this point had been available in a simple block color pallet. “I have always had a deep fascination with Liberty; the store, its aura and legacy, and the floral prints it is home to – there’s nothing quite like it,” says Mette Hay, co-founder of HAY. “It’s rare that you never tire of pattern, but that’s truly the case with Liberty prints, they never get old.”
For the collection, Mette Hay picked out five prints, which range from dark to light in colour: Mitsi, Betsy Ann, Ros, Ed, and Cherry Drop. “There are many things we could have collaborated on, but I was drawn to the idea of applying a Liberty fabric to a pleated lampshade,” she adds. “The Matin Lamp is very contemporary and when the shade is paired with a classic floral Liberty fabric, the print becomes graphic, and in some ways, modern.”
The Liberty edition Matin lamps are launching ahead of the London Design Festival, which takes place later this month. It’ll be available exclusively at Liberty and all HAY retail stores from September 1 to 15, and are part of the permanent HAY collection. The price for the small lamp is £255 GBP (approximately $323 USD) and £289 GBP ($366) for the large lamp.
