It’s only been a matter of months since iconic London-based radio station, Kool FM, announced its return to the airwaves. Now, the former pirate radio station has announced its latest venture: a brand-new record label titled Kool.

Kool FM has been an integral part in the emergence and continued success of jungle and drum and bass music in the UK, helping lay the foundations for music genres that eventually birthed grime, which has gone on to pave the way for global UK rap attention. Founded as Kool FM in 1991 by Eastman and Smurff, the now-online radio station has spent almost 25 years broadcasting the best in underground music.

Now, in line with the announcement of its new label, Kool’s inaugural release: a five-track various-artists EP, Kool Kuts Vol. 1, hits the speakers and soundsystems in celebration of the 2023 edition of Notting Hill Carnival on August 25. The project features artists such as Mozey, Harriet Jaxxon, Blade Runner, Brockie & Det, Shabba, Dynamite MC, Lens, GLXY and more.

Dropping in tandem with its announcement, Kool has now released the first single from Kool FM regulars, Watch The Ride, titled “Wicked Man.” Produced as a steady, summertime head-bopper, “Wicked Man” shows glimpses of reggae inspiration, suggesting further hints of what else is to be expected from the forthcoming Kool Kuts Vol. 1 EP.

While we wait for Kool Kuts Vol. 1 to drop in its entirety, you can listen to Watch The Ride’s “Wicked Man” above.
