Black Thought Announces Autobiography ‘The Upcycled Self’
Exploring The Roots artist’s “creative and emotional origins.”
Black Thought has had a storied musical career, from serving as the MC of the hip-hop group The Roots to putting out his own solo music and even dabbling in acting.
The Philadelphia native artist, whose real name is Tariq Trotter, will be delving into his life and career in his debut book, an autobiography titled The Upcycled Self. Slated to be published later this year via Penguin’s One World, the book will explore “what it means to live an examined life.”
A synopsis of the 208-page book notes that Black Thought’s life began with a tragedy, having burnt down his family’s home as a child, seeing the artist use the account to chart his “creative and emotional origins.”
“In The Upcycled Self, Trotter doesn’t only narrate a riveting and moving portrait of the artist as a young man, he gives readers a courageous model of what it means to live an examined life,” the description reads. “In vivid vignettes, he tells the dramatic stories of the four powerful relationships that shaped him—with community, friends, art, and family—each a complex weave of love, discovery, trauma, and loss.”
Available for pre-order now in hardcover for $26.99 USD, Black Thought’s The Upcycled Self is out on November 14.
