David Zwirner is gearing up to launch “Fold Me,” Wolfgang Tillmans‘ fourth solo exhibition at their gallery in New York. The exhibition showcases Tillmans’s artistic vision through select photographic works that inhibit the idea of simultaneous experiences in life. “Fold Me” features entirely new artwork by the artist, following his major retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Tillmans’s work in “Fold Me” centers around the concept of folds, where the inside and outside converge, leaving physical imprints. He explores the interplay of chance and control, process and time, as he captures the act of seeing through photography.

“My work is informed and sustained by acknowledging and enduring the extremely low probability of making a good picture. That does not mean that everything is coincidence, or that my work is the result of amassing and selecting images. It is an experimental arrangement of sensitivities that I have built over a long time, with different modes of observation and a continuous fine-tuning that lead to the images that make up my work,” said the artist in a statement.

Tillmans has been intrigued by the fold as a visual motif since the 1990s, and he expands on this theme in his recent works, depicting Earth’s surface folds, water, and still lifes with intentionality and intimacy. The exhibition also includes portraits of various individuals, reflecting Tillmans’s exploration of depicting people and their unique moments in history. Additionally, the exhibition showcases Tillmans’s Lighters series, which are non-referential photographic paper sculptures created through folding and drawing with light sources.

Head to David Zwirner’s website for more information. “Fold Me” is on view from September 7 to October 14.

Elsewhere in art, artist Bridget Riley plays with perception in a massive wall art exhibition at Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin, Germany.
