Check Out Thom Browne's New Whale Bag

Suited with references to Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby Dick, Thom Browne‘s Pre-Fall 2023 collection highlighted nautical concepts and maritime motifs including sailor-esque silhouettes, ship sketches on sweaters and sea-blue patchwork scarves alongside a range of statement accessories. Browne’s array of playful yet refined bags stole the show, taking many different shapes and sizes – including ship-shaped bags, briefcases inscribed with scenes from Melville’s story and sophisticated crossbodies. One of the collection’s standout pieces was the Pebble Grain Leather Whale Baguette Bag, a whale-shaped take on a classic Thom Browne silhouette that we’ve now been given a detailed look at.

The whale-shaped bag is completely crafted from black pebble grain leather, fit with brass hardware. An adjustable leather shoulder strap is attached to the signature striped grosgrain loop tab atop the bag (see whale’s blowhole) and opens up to a zippable interior pocket. Browne’s latest creation draws inspiration from his trademark Hector bag silhouette: a dachshund-shaped bag modeled and named after Browne’s own dachshund, Hector. Browne is a renowned storyteller, notorious for implementing canonical stories and referencing pivotal cultural eras. Most recently, the designer presented his debut Haute Couture collection earlier this month in Paris. Browne filled the Opéra Garnier with 2000 two-dimensional onlookers – fitted in the staple grey Thom Browne uniform – as models strutted the collection across the stage. Other recent runways have drawn inspiration from everything ranging from French text, The Little Prince to punk culture.
