Julia Chiang Returns to Tokyo With “Remember That Time When What” Solo Exhibition
Opening on July 15 at NANZUKA UNDERGROUND in Tokyo.
Unveiling at NANZUKA next weekend is Julia Chiang’s new solo exhibition, “Remember That Time When What.” The exhibition will mark the Brooklyn-based painter’s third showcase at the gallery, and the first time in four years since “Pump and Bump.”
A series of 15 new paintings, alongside a selection of watercolor pieces will be displayed at the gallery, all in Chiang’s hallmarked abstract aesthetics. The new body of paintings is described as “a world in which drops, splashes, and petal-like clusters and organic colors harmonize comfortably.“ Open for interpretation, the pieces can be viewed as maps that denote the flow of energy, or even as intriguing patterns of living organisms.
The openness and unpredictability of Chiang’s works carry a level of uncertainty, which the artist clarifies as an important facet of her creative practice. She envisions everything from “sweating, crying, hot pavement on bare skin, spaces in a wall, being invisible, impossible barriers, holding hands, kissing, bodies on bodies, leaning hard, crossing lines, hot skin, dancing, smiling so much your face hurts, touching the moon, swallowing the sky…” These emotions and inconsequential fragments are extracted from Chiang’s everyday life and are channeled into her physical artwork through an intensive yet meditative process.
