Jonatan Leandoer Håstad, better known as Yung Lean, is ready to show you his art.
The Swedish rapper and artist is officially entering the art game and bringing it home for his first major exhibition, Collected Works 2016–2026, next month with a collection of artworks he’s been quietly making for the last decade.
Håstad’s been making wooden sculptures, paintings, and drawings since he was a kid, he says, but it wasn’t until recently he decided to bring it into the public eye. The move follows his live painting installation at Thibaut Grevet’s TTGT Studio during Paris Fashion Week with adidas Originals, alongside a tease of the project via a wheatpaste poster and a studio shot on Instagram.
The upcoming exhibition will take over Stockholm’s Torsgatan 22 from September 25 through October 11, and will feature paintings, collages, works on paper, sculpture, dioramas, and site-specific installations. After the showcase, a curated selection of works, namely sculptures, will go under the hammer in an international online auction with Bukowskis.
Inside the industrial ex-Gasworks, the works will take shape in a series of immersive environments: a salon, television room, and screening room, with large-scale installations and sculptural seating interspersed throughout.
There’s also a new film. Executive produced by and starring Håstad, the short follows two lovers moving through a dreamlike landscape set along the back roads of Sweden. Perhaps a primer for Romain Gavras’ Sacrifice, which he acts in, set to hit Netflix soon.
“Ever since I can remember I dreamed of colors,” the artist expressed. “Just like my songs, the work is made through stream of consciousness. I go where the hand takes me. My paintings mean nothing and also everything. Here they are.”
