Hypebeast Visits: Carpet Company's Wonderful World of Skateboarding
Co-founders and brothers Ayman and Osama Abdeldayem discuss the unique mindset and creative process behind their brand.
“The non-foreign way is: you take classes, you work under somebody, you get a job, you watch videos — then you can start,” Carpet Company co-founders Ayman and Osama Abdeldayem say. “Our way would be ‘let’s do it right now. How would you approach it? Alright, let’s try it. If it doesn’t work, how else would you try it?” This scrappy ethos defines Carpet Company — a raw, authentic, ever-increasing-in-popularity brand from Baltimore that sits at the intersection of skateboarding and streetwear, and the latest subject of Hypebeast Visits.
From their studio/warehouse in Baltimore, Maryland, Ayman and Osama have garnered a fervent, rapidly expanding following with their T-shirts, hoodies, denim and hand-screen printed skate decks. “Our [Egyptian] side says ‘hey, you can’t throw this in the garbage — what can you do to make it work?’ Our math and engineering side (both brothers worked as engineers before turning to Carpet Company full-time) says ‘OK, let’s build something and make it work.’ The skateboarding side is like ‘OK, I like how this looks.’ You combine all three of those things together and you get something that … kind of works.”
Both brothers are easygoing, self-effacing, and grounded — a personality culled from their love of skateboarding and devout Muslim faith (both are sober and pray daily). This unique, approachable personality has led them to a friendship with genre-defining Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile, a Nike SB collaboration and, in 2023, a unique, esteemed spot in the skateboarding and streetwear industry.
