Elon Musk Announces Plans to Launch "TruthGPT"
A “maximum truth-seeking AI” looking to rival that of OpenAI and Google.
In a recent interview with Fox News, Elon Musk voiced his qualms about the current AI systems and announced plans of creating TruthGPT to rival OpenAI‘s chatbots and Google‘s DeepMind which currently dominate the space.
Musk said he was involved with OpenAI in its early beginnings in order to create a counterweight to Google with plans to do good. However he now criticizes the company of going the wrong direction, pointing out how its become “close-source, support profit, and closely allied with Microsoft.” So much so that, “in effect Microsoft has a very strong say if not directly controls OpenAI at this point,” he claims. Musk is also concerned about AI being trained to be politically correct, which he views as simply another way of saying untruthful things and a path towards AI dystopia.
Musk’s “TruthGPT,” seeks to arrive as a third conversational AI option for the world that looks to understand the truth of the universe. He believes this is a reasonable course forward as AI systems potentially surpass humans in power and intelligence.
“I’m going to start something called TruthGPT, or a maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe,” says Musk. “I think this might be the best path to safety in the sense that an AI that cares to understand the universe is unlikely to annihilate humans because we are an interesting part of the universe. Hopefully, they would think that. Humanity could decide to hunt down all the chimpanzees and kill them but we haven’t.”
Musk acknowledges that starting late in the game will put him at a disadvantage, but that doesn’t seem to deter him from trying. The Twitter CEO has thought about the concept of TruthGPT for some time now, mentioning it in a tweet earlier this February. As he recently filed for a company named “X.AI” in March, we may soon hear more about the project.
