slowthai Follows ‘UGLY’ LP Release With New “YUM” Visual
Depicting a slippery descent into self-destruction.
slowthai is reflecting on some of his lowest points in the music video for “YUM.” On the UGLY album cut, the British punk rapper muses on drugs, sex and alcohol acting as vehicles for his own self-destruction.
“More coke, more weed, more E’s, more trip, naughty,” he raps in quick, punchy bars. “More sex, less stress, head yes, what, you wanna be my empress? / More bass, more raves, more shades, what, you tryna save face?”
The accompanying visual opens with a line warning viewers: “your addictions will eat you up.” slowthai, meanwhile, stands in a field holding a child while seemingly tripping. Reality and illusion continue to blur as the rapper takes on a childlike role himself, being held by an older woman.
UGLY, the follow-up to 2021’s Tyron, just dropped on Friday, March 3. As slowthai’s third album, the rapper uses the project to lean into the chaos, taking his unique grime sound a step further with a more complex approach to self-probing his own patterns and faults.
“‘YUM’ is me saying this is what people want me to do but this isn’t doing anything for me,” slowthai said. “I’m ready to leave it all behind but it keeps pulling me back — more this, more that, it’s never enough.”
