Mimi Shodeinde Looks to the Female Form for NRIN Vessels

British-Nigerian designer Mimi Shodeinde has crafted a series of sculptural vases in metal and wood, basing the form of each on the “softness of the female form”.

The NRIN vases, with a name inspired by the Yoruba word for female – “Obinrin” – are based around a central wooden column crafted from oil-staned ash. A piece of cast aluminium is molded around the wood, and takes on a satisfying look of liquid metal. Across the surface of the metal, a texture based on tiny specks of pollen has been employed to add a layer of tactility.

For London-based Shodeinde, the two sections of the design have two representations: the flowing form of the metal speaks to the female body, while the wooden column references strength, stability, and nods to African materiality.

“The flowing metal form of the NRIN vessels echo the softness of the female form whilst the mirrored finish nods to inner reflection, allowing both sides to be seen as one,” the designer says. “Organic gestures balance with the harmony of materials to create contemporary sinuous shapes that are both elegant in form but functional.”

The NRIN vessels will be available to purchase from Shodeinde’s site later this month. Prices are available on request.
