During a roadmap presentation on Tuesday, Meta disclosed details of its forthcoming advancements in AR and VR to thousands of employees in its Reality Labs division. At large, the discussion laid out the company’s plans to continue investing in consumer devices, following several financial setbacks and budget cuts. Among its many items of business, Meta announced plans to launch its first fully-functioning AR glasses in 2027, according to The Verge.

The company revealed plans to release other AR glasses before 2027; however, the device coming that year will be the one that CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicts will eventually be used as commonly as mobile phones. It could be Meta’s “iPhone moment,” he previously said.

The tech giant’s forthcoming AR glasses will be able to project high-quality avatars through holograms in the real world. According to reports, employees will be able to test the glasses in 2024, during an “internal launch.” The public will not see the device until 2027 when the company releases its “Innovation” collection of AR glasses, alongside a “Scale” line that is less technologically advanced.

Elsewhere, the company detailed a slew of launches that will come before the highly-anticipated AR glasses. Per The Verge, an updated version of the RayBan Stories will hit shelves this fall, and the thinner, more-powerful Quest 3 headset will arrive soon after. Next year, the company will drop a VR headset it has codenamed “Ventura,” and in 2025, the third-generation RayBan Stories will arrive with a “viewfinder” display.

Stay tuned for more information on Meta’s forthcoming AR and VR launches.
