Back in February, Karimoku Furniture Inc. opened its Karimoku Commons Kyoto location — a three-storeyed hybrid space to showcase furniture from its assortment of premium brands.

Envisioned by Keiji Ashizawa Architects, the space is nestled in Nakagyo-Ku, one of Kyoto’s most vibrant districts. Renovated from a traditional Japanese wooden townhouse known as Machiya, the building now features a contemporary exterior that nods to its history — some of the Machiya’s olden charms like the wooden lattices and street eave have been reinterpreted with modern materials.

Welcoming guests on the first floor is a carefully curated space that invokes calmness, relaxation, and homeliness. With interiors rendered in muted yet neutral hues, the first floor brings out the warmth of the wooden furniture adorning the space. As visitors make their way to the second floor, the muted interiors transition to feature furniture and fittings in a darker smoked oak, which are all crafted by the Karimoku lifestyle brand.

Last but not least, the third floor is reserved for the display of other high-end furniture from the likes of Karimoku New Standard, MAS as well as Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku. A library space and showroom have also been implemented, which house remarkable pieces from the SEYUN collection which is a part of the manufacturer’s collaboration with Zaha Hadid Architects.

The space is scented in an exclusive aroma that has been specially developed by Megumi Fukatsu, and interior stylist Yumi Nakata. On top of that, MUSIC SHARE also tailored original music for the building to enhance the holistic experience.

Karimoku Commons Kyoto is intended to serve as both a showroom and office space, allowing visitors to learn and experience the manufacturer’s “high-tech and high-touch” ethos, state-of-the-art woodworking machinery as well as artisanal craftsmanship in person.
