Andy Warhol’s Patek Philippe Wristwatch Is Going Up for Auction
Estimated for up to $80,000 USD.
UPDATE: Andy Warhol’s Patek Philippe 2526 was sold for $101,600 USD at Sotheby’s NY Fine Watches auction on March 7. The result far exceeds the initial estimate of $40,000 – $80,000 USD, and an astounding 1,747% increase from its 1988 sale at the Andy Warhol Collection, Part II auction.
Sotheby’s has posted an auction for a Patek Philippe wristwatch previously owned by Andy Warhol.
Attired in a slim 36 mm case made of 18-carat pink gold, the timepiece (reference 2526) is believed to be made around 1955, starring a first series enamel dial. Nowadays, enamel dials are reserved for special releases, due to their costly and delicate nature which makes production difficult. But for reference 2526, the choice to use incorporate the enamel dial was a conscious one for the horologer — namely for the material’s anti-oxidative qualities and high resistance to moisture.
In addition, a Serpico Y Laino signature is also marked on the eggshell-hued enamel dial, which references the company’s history as Patek Philippe’s exclusive retailer in Caracas, Venezuela. Meanwhile, inside the timepiece beats the legendary 12’600 automatic self-winding calibre.
Formerly, the pink gold timepiece was sold in the Andy Warhol Collection, Part II auction back in December 1988. The collection included an array of the late artist’s personal belongings that range from collectibles, jewelry, and furniture to paintings. Consigned by the purchaser who bought the piece in the 1988 auction, Andy Warhol’s pink gold Patek Philippe watch is up for sale for the second time at Sotheby’s.
Estimated to go between $40,000 – $80,000 USD, the timepiece will commence auction on March 7, 12 p.m. EST via Sotheby’s.
