In October, Tems dropped her now-hit song “Me & U,” her first solo release in 2023. Two months later, the Lagos-based singer has now returned with another single.

The track is called “Not An Angel,” and similar to “Me & U,” is backed by pop-leaning, Afrobeats instrumentation. “This song is about knowing your worth and moving on in life from anything holding you back,” Tems said.

In the song, Tems chronicles about putting all she can into a relationship and eventually moving on with peace of mind.

“’Cause I’m not an angel / I’m just a girl that knows the truth,” she sings in the chorus. “And I couldn’t save you / You couldn’t see what I’ve been through.”

While Tems has been making music for several years, she seems to have truly found her stride as of late. Last year, she wad the featured artist on Future’s “WAIT FOR U,” which wound up being the most popular track on his I Never Liked You LP with nearly 700 million streams to date.
