Jay-Z Could Be Getting His Own Day in New York City
A bill proposed December 4 be named “Jay-Z Day.”

Jay-Z may be the recipient of his own day in New York City. A new bill proposed by New York City Councilmembers would declare December 4 – the rapper’s birthday – as “Jay-Z Day.”
Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, was born in Brooklyn and grew up in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood. He’s previously spoken about how his mother fostered his love for music, gifting him a boombox as a child.
Councilmembers wrote in the bill proposal that the day would celebrate Jay-Z’s “legendary status as a masterful MC and lyricist and as an innovative entrepreneur.” The bill will be reviewed by the city’s Committee on Cultural Affairs, Libraries and International Intergroup Relations.
Another major institution, the Brooklyn Public Library, recently paid homage to the influential rapper with his own exhibit entitled “Book of HOV.” The exhibit was promoted with special edition library cards and increased memberships by thousands.
