Reports Indicate 2025's 'Call of Duty' Release Will Be A 'Black Ops II' Sequel
The forthcoming title will feature a storyline set in 2030 plus a mixture of new and remade multiplayer maps.
The Call of Duty franchise will apparently be staying in the Black Ops universe for its next two releases, as a new report from Insider Gaming indicates that 2025’s Call of Duty release will be a sequel to 2012’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II. The title, currently codenamed “Saturn,” features a single-player storyline set in 2030 and a multiplayer experience that offers a mixture of new maps and remade classics from Black Ops II.
This 2025 release will mark the second consecutive game from the Black Ops universe, as 2024’s Call of Duty release is a separate Black Ops game that’s set in the ’90s around the Gulf War. Little more is known about the forthcoming game, but the same reports indicate that it will feature a “rebuilt movement system,” the same “Pick 10” multiplayer perks-and-attachments setup as Black Ops II and a classic round-based Zombies mode. The above-mentioned mixture of maps new and old could well be owing to the recent negative feedback around Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III‘s multiplayer launch, which only offered remakes of maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II upon its launch.
Don’t be surprised if you see more leaks from this yet-unnamed title or others in the coming months as well: back in October, Activision announced that the Call of Duty franchise had already been planned out through 2027.
