The Power of Color is a dynamic and vibrant group exhibition taking place at VILLAZAN Madrid, featuring the works of three internationally acclaimed artists: Bibi Lei, Sun-Kyo Park, and Wahab Saheed. This compelling exhibition brings together a collection of ten striking artworks, each of which encapsulates the artists’ distinct approach to color and artistry, resulting in a harmonious visual narrative.

Bibi Lei, a Portuguese-Chinese artist residing in Tokyo, is renowned for her unique self-taught techniques, including finger painting and untethered brushstrokes. Her art reflects her unwavering love for painting and the profound influence of motherhood on her creative expression. Lei’s works exhibit a sense of speed and directness, characterized by raw, unfiltered emotions and intuition. Her artistic style is often described as a form of “Fauxism,” characterized by its cuteness and naivety, and it is inspired by the competitive and brave spirit she observes in her daughter and the children around her.

Sun-Kyo Park, born in Jeonju, South Korea, in 1990, brings a unique perspective to the exhibition through his five distinctive paintings. Influenced by 8-bit video games from his childhood and inspired by the simple yet harmonious graphics of these games, his art represents the concept of “distance” – exploring the nuanced gray areas that exist between opposing elements in the world, such as the distance between individuals, the mind-body connection, and the duality of good and evil. To illustrate the captivating allure of light, Park utilizes red light in his work, evoking the impulsive and frenzied nature of a laser light that would captivate a cat.

Wahab Saheed, a Nigerian artist born in Lagos in 1998, contributes three powerful portraits to the exhibition. His work is dedicated to portraying the diverse identities of black individuals, employing sharp, rapid gestural mark-making that starkly contrasts with the flat, almost poster-like composition of the spaces his subjects inhabit. His use of materials, including charcoal, brightly colored pastels, acrylic paint, and oil pastels, creates a boundary between the subject and background, symbolizing the fragility of human nature and the intricate internal complexities of each subject.

Experience this dynamic group exhibition at VILLAZAN Madrid which is on view until November 18.
