As the founder of the Memphis Milan movement, Ettore Sottsass believed that a designer should give equal importance to evoking the senses, as they do to functionality. Despite only operating from 1980 to 1987, Memphis has gained cult status amongst artists, designers and non-creatives alike — from the boxing ring bed once owned by the late-Karl Lagerfeld, to David Bowie’s £45,000 GBP Olivetti Valentine Typewriter.

To satiate demand, Phaidon is releasing an updated version to the sold-out monograph on Sottsass. The previous edition has been on the reseller market for some time now, garnering upwards of $500 USD on some websites — over six times its initial cost. Price aside, the book is packed content — spanning 492 pages of specialty stocks that explores Sottsass’ extensive archives, including drawings and sketches from the designer’s countless sketchbooks, architectural projects and product design, to his graphics, sculpture and ceramics.

Written by author and professor, Philippe Thomé, Ettore Sottsass will release globally for $79.95 USD on November 2.

In related news, we recently unearthed the rise, fall and resurrection of Memphis Milano.
