ARMEDANGELS Is Making '70s-Inspired Uniforms for Climate Activists

FW22’s “THE SMART REBELS OF ARMEDANGELS” is littered with sustainable threads.

“We are not here to make fashion, we are here to make change,” states the sustainable German label ARMEDANGELS. It’s a message that’s stuck with the brand since it was founded in 2007 and remains front-and-center for its Fall/Winter 2022 collection “THE SMART REBELS OF ARMEDANGELS.”

Unlike most clothing companies, ARMEDANGELS has split Fall and Winter into two separate occasions, however, both present collections heavily influenced by the 1970s, in turn inspiring the brand’s activist messaging that’s seen throughout the seasonal campaign. Flared, wide-leg pants and patch pocket denim, served up in traditional hues created using natural clay for a sustainable dying method and finishes ranging from a classically worn-in design to ones treated with “natural” lasers, combine with knitwear that’s equally sustainably-minded. From alpaca yarn to GRS-certified wool that’s partly recycled, ARMEDANGELS presents ribbed singlets, cable knit and argyle classics, and sweater vests in a melange of pastel hues.

Echoing the theme are capes and double-faced tops adorned with the word “Awareness,” while an in-collection “Circle Capsule” made from off-cuts taken from the fashion industry’s waste bears the statement “CLEANING UP THE INDUSTRY – SINCE 2007”.

ARMEDANGELS makes a case for staples made ethically and with purpose. MA-1 Bomber jackets — something new for the brand — join a water-repellent M65 Fishtail Parka for outerwear that’s made from organic cotton and recycled materials. Together, it’s about the pieces serving a function through their use of color, rather than an extravagant design; that is not the activist way, instead opting for vital hues that draw attention to clothes that otherwise hide their true and important ethos.

Take a look at the ARMEDANGELS FW22 collection above, and find out more about the brand online. The collection will drop on August 20.
