Allegedly due to a financing conflict with NetEase.

Activision Blizzard has canceled its World of Warcraft mobile game, Bloomberg reported. The project had reportedly been in development for three years but was ultimately shelved due to a dispute regarding financing between Blizzard and its Chinese publishing partner, NetEase.

“The two companies disagreed over terms and ultimately called a halt to the project, which had been kept under wraps,” a source close to the deal told Bloomberg.

The game was reportedly codenamed “Neptune” and was intended to be a Warcraft spinoff, taking place during a different time period than the main title.

NetEase has worked with Blizzard for over a decade, and also publishes the popular mobile title Diablo Immortal. While the relationship between Blizzard and NetEase moving forward is unclear, Warcraft fans can still look forward to the developer’s forthcoming mobile strategy game, Warcraft Arclight Rumble.

In other gaming news, Higround has joined SEGA for a nostalgic Sonic The Hedgehog and Dreamcast capsule.
