Roger Dubuis has collaborated with Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama, to bring his ‘sexy robot’ aesthetic to the Swiss watch brand’s signature model.

The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Sorayama Monobalancier is the third entry in Roger Dubuis’ Urban Culture Tribe series, which has already seen collaborations with tattooist Dr. Woo and graffiti artist, Gully.

Hajime Sorayama’s debuted his “super-realistic feminine” concept in his 1983 book, ‘Sexy Robots,’ which would later inspire the suit of armor in the 1987 film, ‘Robocop’.

Knowing that Sorayama “chooses to pursue opportunities that force him to push the boundaries of his art,” Roger Dubuis invited him to the Manufacture to reinterpret the brand’s signature star motif.

Sorayama moves away the brand’s traditional design codes, opting for curved lines and highly polished finishes on the 42mm grade 5 titanium Monobalancier. Revised lines on both the case and movement offer a greater sense of depth, while Roger Dubuis’ signature star now floats above the mainspring barrel.

The artist also reimagined the brand’s micro-rotor, creating a “hypnotising moiré optical illusion triggered by the natural fluid movements of the wearer’s wrist.”

“The Excalibur Sorayama MB is a perfect blend of two worlds,” says Sorayama. “With Roger Dubuis’ and my signature both recognisable at first sight. I’m thrilled we were able to bring such a hyper expressive timepiece to life. By pushing our limits, we’ve created a distinctive moiré and a singular masterpiece.”

The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Sorayama Monobalancier is available as a limited edition of 28 pieces, available first in Japan, with price on request.
