For Opening Ceremony‘s new Fall/Winter 2022 collection, the label takes inspiration from co-creative director Humberto Leon‘s recent experience opening the Chinese-Peruvian restaurant, Chifa, in Los Angeles. Celebrating the multicultural heritage delivered in Chifa’s diverse menu, the brand offers an all-rounded collection consisting of cheeky food-related text, playful graphics, and saturated color options centered around the dining experience. The collection also continues to push the boundaries of jersey textiles and features a special collaboration with heritage American workwear brand Dickies.

“This collection really pushes the creative boundaries of fabrication—how we perceive a material and how to apply it to a style, what bodies and silhouettes can we create with that material. We used jersey in 90% of the collection but in unexpected ways. What appears to be cable knit sweaters or mohair knits are cut-and-sewn and treated jersey pieces. Polar knit fleece is a new medium to construct a tailored suit,” commented Leon.

Pieces feature a variety of humorous wordplay details as well as dietary restrictions such as GLUTEN FREE, NO MILK, and CARB FREE in reference to the Chifa waitstaff’s requests from customers in the first six months. Continuing the insubordinate themes that have defined the brand in the last two decades, highlight pieces include the compact Razor Clam bag in bright green and pink, various reinterpretations of iconic varsity styles, a shoulder-strap bag shaped like a milk carton, and sweater-pocket pullovers.
