Honda Unveils the 2023 Civic Type R
The fastest, most powerful Honda for the U.S. market.
Honda has finally unmasked its 2023 Civic Type R. Revealed in a world premiere in Tokyo, Japan, the new FL5 succeeds the 2017 – 2021 FK8, and outperforms all previous Type R models with its 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo engine.
Once again channeling Honda’s racing spirit in achieving pure sports performance for pure driving joy, the new design makes use of the 6-speed manual transmission and rev match control system, and couples that with updated aerodynamics for balance, stability, and response at high speeds. Borrowing lines from the eleventh generation Civic, this new Type R foregoes the angular lines of the previous model but does maintain the “low & wide” stance.
While no performance specs have been released by Honda, they have repeatedly stated that this is the most powerful Type R, meaning it surpasses the previous model’s 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The FL5 will be available in five colors but so far fans have only been treated with the iconic Championship White version with its badge, valve cover, and racing seats arriving in the signature red. An interesting tidbit can be found in the triple exhaust system, where the previous version had the smaller tip in the middle, it now sees the biggest outlet sitting in the middle.
Those looking to learn more will have to wait closer to the release date in the Fall. Speculators have this new Type R priced close to the $40,000 USD mark. Check out the video above to watch the official video reveal.
