Denzil Patrick SS23 Centers on Youthful Vigor and Freedom

For Daniel Gayle of London-based label Denzil Patrick, creativity takes form through culturally relevant and responsible design. In his case, the brand serves as an homage to his Jamaican and Irish ancestry, which is heightened by his experiences in London. For the brand’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection, Gayle turns 16 again by focusing on his childhood in ’90s London.

A time marked by youthful vigor, the pursuit of freedom, confusion and unparalleled ambition, Gayle’s latest collection channels the feeling of fun-filled fearlessness. “It felt like anything was possible, and it only lasted that summer, that feeling,” Gayle told Vogue Runway. Mirroring energetic adolescent emotions, the offering is complete with an array of styles and visceral colors. There simply are no rules. Geometrical color-blocked knits are paired with short shorts, knee-length coats and button-down shirts met with multicolored graphic prints and pleated skirts reveal that there is a coolness to reimaging school-inspired garments.

Other highlights of the collection include a blue and purple-toned coordinating set with all-over hearts, sage and gray-scale tailoring with numerical print detailing and diamond-pattern pants. Whether it be the school, club or street, the collection exhibits the harmony between fused dress notes.

“With this third collection, that’s what we’ve come to,” Gayle told Vogue Runway. “It’s why I feel emancipation both for me as 16-year-old Daniel, but also the emancipation of my job today. We made the collection we wanted to make. I’ve thrown the rule book away, because I don’t want to feel confined to anything because I’m just exploring, and what makes it legitimate is that I’m doing it.”
