With the official launch less than a month away, Nothing has offered the first glimpse at its highly-anticipated phone (1) to a private audience at Art Basel. Consistent with its prior offerings, the Nothing phone (1) features a transparent casing with a unique mechanical design composed of over 400 components. Its robust and lightweight exterior frame is made of 100% recycled aluminum and 50% of the phone’s plastic parts consist of bio-based or post-consumer recycled materials.

Leading the design team behind the futuristic smartphone is former Dyson designer Adam Bates with inspiration taken from artists like Massimo Vignelli who designed New York’s subway map and made a complex system look like art. Side button layouts, flattened edges, and dual rear-facing cameras appear to be similar to that of the iPhone 12, and a closer look at the contents of the clear case back reveals a large integrated charging coil, white light strips, and “Nothing” branding along the bottom. As for functionality, the technology company’s co-founder and CEO Carl Pei has hinted that the phone will be heavily software-focused and will run a custom version of Android backed by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. Early looks at the user interface can be found above.

“For years now, it felt like all the artists had left the industry. All we’re left with are cold, unexciting and derivative products. It was time for a fresh take.” said Pei. “phone (1) was designed out of instinct, making a product for ourselves and more importantly that we would be proud to share with our loved ones. Can’t wait for people to start experiencing it.”

The Nothing phone (1) will host a “Return to Instinct” event on July 12 at 16:00 BST (9 am EST), in which full product details will be announced. Viewers can RSVP to stream the event here.
