Longines has trawled its archives and reworked the first high beat dive watch, the Ultra-Chrono from 1968.

The 2022 version is slightly bigger – its cushion-shaped case 43mm instead of 42mm – but beats at the same 36,000vph as the original, but this time powered by an ETA calibre L836.6, developed with Longines, exclusively for the brand.

The watch features a unidirectional bezel with sapphire crystal insert with luminous indices while a screw-down caseback and crown make the 2022 Ultra-Chron water resistant to 300M.

Swiss testing centre TIMELAB has certified the watch as an ‘Ultra Chronometer’ over a period of 15 days. The certification guarantees the same +6/-4 seconds a day accuracy as that of COSC, but does so at three different temperatures and tests the cased watch, rather than just the movement.

The 2022 Ultra-Chron is available on either a leather strap or stainless steel bracelet and is supplied with a black NATO strap made from recycled material.

The Ultra-Chron is available now via Longines, with prices starting at £2,750 GBP (approximately $3,460 USD).
