Take a Closer Look at Daniel Arsham and Kohler's 'Divided Layers' Installation
Currently on view at Milan Design Week.

Following the debut of Daniel Arsham and Kohler‘s limited-edition Rock.01 sink, the duo joins forces once again for an experiential art installation at Milan Design Week. Occupying a square in Palazzo del Senato — a Baroque palace in the heart of Milan — the Divided Layers installation presents an expanse of towering white panels that culminate in a portal-like destination.
Each panel references the additive construction of the 3D-printed Rock.01 sink, and the cadence of the walls is designed to resemble the rhythm of the columns in the Palazzo. The installation can be entered via a narrow walkway — surrounded by a pond that mirrors the volume of the otherworldly opening.
“The flow of water is experienced in both negative and positive space, regardless of a form’s ‘function’,” says Daniel Arsham in a press release. “In Divided Layers, visitors experience being within the sink, rather than a user of a functional piece.”
The “Divided Layers” installation is now live at Kohler’s FuoriSalone exhibition in Milan and will run until June 12. Viewers around the world are invited to attend virtually with registration now open on the Studio Kohler website.
