Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy has addressed the fan questions surrounding the sexuality of Noah Schnapp’s Will Byers. Readers who have yet to watch season four should be warned of the spoilers ahead.

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Levy did not directly answer the question of whether Will is gay but instead gave the explanation that they provide “clear intention and strategy and real thought” for each character. ”Without getting into where we go later in Season 4 [Volume 2], I guess I’ll just say that there aren’t many accidents on Stranger Things,” the producer said. “There is clear intention and strategy and real thought given to each and every character. So, if you came away from Volume 1 feeling those bread crumbs of plot and character, it’s probably no accident.”

Reports have pointed out that a scene in episode five shared by Will and Mike, portrayed by Finn Wolfhard, may allude to the former attempting to open up about his sexuality as he tells Mike, ”Sometimes I think it’s just scary to open up like that, to say how you really feel, especially to people you care about the most because what if they don’t like the truth?” There are also instances throughout the season that could refer to Will’s sexuality, such as his report on World War II codebreaker Alan Turing, who was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts.

This is not the first time a character’s sexuality was a topic of conversation on Stranger Things; in season three, newcomer Robin, played by Maya Hawke, came out to Joe Keery’s Steve in a heartwarming scene.

In related news, Stranger Things staples Charlie Heaton and Natalia Dyer spoke to HYPEBEAST about the show’s newest season.
