Following the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, director Sam Raimi is already looking ahead to a potential fourth film. The most recent movie introduced the original titular webslingers Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it appears that it might not be the last audiences might see them.

The addition of these characters sparked a renewed interest in the older films with many fans urging the entertainment company to revive the storylines of Maguire and Garfield’s Spider-Man. Raimi appears to agree with some of these fans after revealing that he would be willing to do so “if there was a great story there.” Raimi, who directed the 2002 Spider-Man and its sequels, spoke to Rolling Stones on the opportunity to bring back Maguire,

“My love for the characters hasn’t diminished one iota.

It would be the same things that would stop me now that stopped me then: ‘Does Tobey want to do it? Is there an emotional arc for him? Is there a great conflict for this character? And is there a worthy villain that fits into the theme of the piece?’ There’s a lot of questions that would have to be answered. If those could be answered, then I’d love to.”

Before the fourth Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film could finish, the studio canceled the project and later rebooted with Andrew Garfield as the titular lead in 2012. Speaking on the cancelation, Raimi said in 2013 to Vulture, “It was simply that we had a deadline and I couldn’t get the story to work on a level that I wanted it to work. I was very unhappy with Spider-Man 3, and I wanted to make Spider-Man 4 to end on a very high note, the best Spider-Man of them all. But I couldn’t get the script together in time, due to my own failings, and I said to Sony, ‘I don’t want to make a movie that is less than great, so I think we shouldn’t make this picture. Go ahead with your reboot, which you’ve been planning anyway.’”

Further on in the interview with Rolling Stone, Raimi also confirmed that Spider-Man 4 would have seen Bruce Campbell’s Mysterio appear alongside Kraven The Hunter. It remains to be seen if Maguire will be brought back. Raimi’s next blockbuster film, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness is hitting theaters on May 6.

In other entertainment news, Michelle Pfeiffer has revealed she would “consider” reprising her Catwoman role.
