Salehe Bembury and Studio Proba Collaborate on Colourful Homewares
Turning his attention from Crocs to cushions.
Having firmly made himself a household name in the realm of streetwear and sneaker collaborations, Salehe Bembury has turned his attention to homeware – working with multidisciplinary design practice Studio Proba on a new collection of cushions.
Titled “Absorbed Language”, the cushions have seen Bembury and Studio Proba founder Alex Proba combine their respective aesthetics and inspirations. Each features a handwoven tufted surface and is patterned with organic shapes in bold colours.
On the collaboration, Proba said:
“We joined forces last year and created a handwoven pillow paired with Salehe’s signature pattern and Studio Proba’s signature shapes. It’s a perfect blend of both worlds and we hope to be able to connect our communities and do more of that kind of collaboration in the future.”
Alex Proba founded her eponymous studio in 2013, with a background in interior architecture, and furniture and spatial design. She translates the visual language used in her projects into a range of homeware, named Proba Home, which she describes as a process of turning sketches into “forms to squeeze, set, sit on, and curl up in”. She is perhaps best known for her “A Poster A Day” project which she worked on from 2013 to 2017, and saw her create an abstract digital collage every day for four years.
“Patterns and textures have their own challenges—bringing them to life is equally challenging, but the outcome is even more gratifying,” she says.
The “Absorbed Language” cushion collection will launch exclusively on May 24 at 9 a.m. PST on the websites of both Studio Proba and Bembury’s Spungenext Crocs collaboration, which goes on sale at 9 a.m. EST on the same day.
In other design news, Artist Richard Prince and designer Dr. Romanelli have collaborated on an exclusive collection of furniture, now on sale at the Gagosian Shop on London’s Burlington Arcade.
