Justin Lin Steps Down as 'Fast X' Director
He will, however, remain attached to the project as a producer.
Justin Lin is no longer directing Fast X, but will remain attached to the film as a producer.
According to reports, he stepped down from his duties as director just a few days after production for the 10th Fast & Furious film began, supposedly due to creative differences. There seems to be no negative feelings from Lin’s side according to the statement he shared regarding his exit:
“With the support of Universal, I have made the difficult decision to step back as director of FAST X, while remaining with the project as a producer. Over 10 years and five films, we have been able to shoot the best actors, the best stunts, and the best damn car chases. On a personal note, as the child of Asian immigrants, I am proud of helping to build the most diverse franchise in movie history. I will forever be grateful to the amazing cast, crew and studio for their support, and for welcoming me into the FAST family.”
Sources add that production will be halted as execs and producers find a director to replace Lin. As of writing, Fast X is still slated for a May 19, 2023 release.
Lin joined the Fast & Furious franchise during Tokyo Drift and went on to direct the fourth film, Fast Five, Fast and Furious 6 and F9, the latter of which “became one of the biggest films in the post-pandemic era” and eared over $720 million USD in the global box office.
