Gallery COMMON in Tokyo is launching a retrospective exhibition entitled “DAIDO HYSTERIC” that pays homage to seminal Japanese photographer, Daido Moriyama. Worldly-recognized for his influential contributions to candid street photography, Moriyama’s presentation is centered upon his acclaimed photobook entitled Daido hysteric no. 4.

The photobook was published by cult Harajuku fashion brand Hysteric Glamour in 1993, and spotlights Moriyama’s signature images that merged fashion and art. The gallery expressed in a statement that the photobook “arguably laid the groundwork for the collaborative culture that would come to define Harajuku in the 90s and onwards.”

The presentation will encompass 48 gelatin silver prints and 9 silkscreen canvases featuring key images from the photobook as well as unseen photographs from that period. These visuals were rediscovered when Moriyama scoured through his film archives for this presentation.

Accompanying the exhibition, Gallery COMMON and Akio Nagasawa Publishing will be co-publishing a restored reprint of the photobook. Initially launched in an edition of 300, the rare publication will once again be available in a limited edition of 900. In commemoration of the show, 50 of the 900 copies will include a special collector’s edition gelatin silver print. Hysteric Glamour’s Shibuya store will also showcase a selection of 2004 Daido Moriyama × Hysteric Glamour collaborative silkscreen prints for the same duration as the exhibition.

“DAIDO HYSTERIC” will be on view from April 29 through May 22. Visit Gallery COMMON’s website for more information.
