Blockboy 'n Friend$ Animates South Africa's Creative Energy at Sole DXB
The new project from Cee The Kreator unites art, animation and streetwear in a colorful universe.
While art and anime have always had a presence within streetwear, Blockboy ‘n Friend$ is a new animated project that’s solidifying these cross-cultural connections. Referencing styles and subcultures that are popular in South Africa’s creative scene, Blockboy ‘n Friend$ is a futuristic universe founded by Cee the Kreator. Launching as an animated series, Blockboy ‘n Friend$ brought its characters to life at this year’s edition of Sole DXB festival in Dubai.
Each of the BBNF characters speak to different subcultural style expressions: basketball attire, rare sneakers, and superhero-inspired accessories. “Growing up in Africa, elements of international culture, specifically those we saw on TV that reflected people with shared heritage, were iconic,” explains Cee the Kreator, “These aesthetics played a huge role in the dreams of our childhood, and you see that here.”
While animated projects from the past have only existed on TV and computer screens, Blockboy ‘n Friend$ is equally interested in creating physical manifestations of its universe. Under the bright blue skies of Blockboy ‘n Friend$’s booth at Sole DXB, attendees could browse prints of original artwork, figurines of BBNF characters, skateboard decks, apparel and customized sneakers.
Sharing South Africa’s creative influences with an international audience, Blockboy ‘n Friend$ will unveil additional product categories and upcoming artist collaborations in the next months. By using animated characters with personalities and relatable styles, BBNF offers a visually-rich and dynamic way to understand its creators’ inspirations. “Technology has allowed us to create content from any and everywhere, and present it to the world,” adds Cee the Kreator.
