Shannon Abloh has opened up about her life a year after the passing of her late husband Virgil Abloh.

In a recent interview for The New York Times, Abloh revealed that Virgil knew of the rare heart cancer cardiac angiosarcoma in July 2019, and chose to keep it secret as he didn’t want people thinking, “Are you okay?” and that the family never believed that the cancer would be so aggressive, adding, “It wasn’t like we knew that he was going to pass.”

While many remember the struggles of the last two years of the pandemic, Shannon Abloh, in a way, was thankful for her experiences as it allowed her to spend the last two years in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin with Virgil. “I know that Covid was an incredibly hard thing for so many people, but for us, it was an amazing time because Virgil didn’t have to make excuses to get out of shows or DJ-ing. No one could go anywhere. So we were able to have those last two and a half years.”

On top of continuing Virgil’s work with the Virgil Abloh Foundation and Virgil Abloh Securities, Shannon Abloh is also the mother of their six-year-old son Grey and nine-year-old daughter Lowe. In the interview, she also disclosed that the pain from the loss changed her brain chemistry and that her short-term memory was gone for the first six months. She also concluded that through all of her grief, she was finally able to move forward and reassured Virgil’s legacy with, “So we never had the ‘this is the legacy that I want you to work toward’ discussion. But because I was with him for so long, I knew every inch of him. I knew every inch of his brain.” Read the full interview over at The New York Times.
