Mario Ayala Transforms Jeffrey Deitch Into a Roadside Truck Stop

Jeffrey Deitch brought a glimpse of Southern California back to its New York outpost thanks to rising artist, Mario Ayala.

In Truck Stop, Ayala has meticulously recreated a roadside chapel, tire shop and highway billboard inside the vast expanse of the gallery. Described by the artist as “working class paintings,” Ayala looks to interact with the mechanics and truck drivers he grew up with, as well as art connoisseurs, by way of combining artistic traditions set forth by Jasper Johns and Ed Ruscha, with an array of unconventional art methods, such as the application of industrial painting processes.

Beneath all the high-low references, Ayala blurs the line between reality and illusion, ordinary and strange — a certain reflection of the contemporary American experience. Truck Stop is on view at Jeffrey Deitch NYC until October 29.

Elsewhere, Shirin Neshat is the latest artist to stand in solidarity with Iran.
