'The Crow' x Supreme Fall 2021 Collaboration
Highlighting evocative scenes from James O’Barr’s supernatural dark fantasy comic book series.
Following its latest team-up with Clarks Originals, Supreme is now set to release its The Crow collaboration for Fall 2021.
Written and illustrated by American artist and author James O’Barr, the supernatural dark fantasy comic book series is set in O’Barr’s native Detroit, where the young couple of Eric and Shelly are brutally murdered by a street gang. Guided by a mystical crow, Eric is resurrected from his grave one year after his murder to seek revenge and reflect on his lost love.
Serving as an expression of dark romance with its style and content, O’Barr drew expanded on the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Rimbaud with inspiration from The Cure, Joy Division and Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy.
“O’Barr’s stark black and white drawings and poetic dialogue create a mood which is at once morbid and humorous,” wrote artist Dike Blair in a 1994 interview with O’Barr. “The combination of a ‘no one else has ever felt pain like this’ sentiment with rock ‘n roll lyrics and comic images creates a perfectly American, dark celebration of adolescence.”
During his time in Berlin with the Marine Corps, James O’Barr began developing The Crow to help deal with the tragic death of his fiancé at the hands of a drunk driver when he was 18-years-old. Published by Caliber Press in 1989, the first four volumes “Despair, “Irony,” “Fear” and “Pain” served as a means of processing anger and anguish for O’Barr. The Crow concluded with a fifth and final installment in a collected edition published in 1992, selling more than a million copies worldwide and receiving a live-action adaptation starring Brandon Lee in 1994.
“The Crow was born of my pain and tragedies. If it can help people through theirs, I’m glad to have done so,” said James O’Barr. “The heart of The Crow has always been the same: Pain and grief, no matter how bad, are temporary. Love is forever.”
Supreme’s collaborative collection highlights evocative scenes from The Crow, with original artwork is expressed on a Schott® Perfecto Jacket, Work Jacket, Sweater, Shirt, Long Sleeve Top, two Hooded Sweatshirts, Jeans, Cargo Pants and two T-Shirts. Rounding up the special range is a skateboard and 100% and 1000% MEDICOM TOY KUBRICK figures set to be released at a later date.
