Apple Music Lossless Audio Now Available on Several Devices
Subscribers will not be able to experience lossless-quality streaming when using the Apple AirPods, however.
Apple Music has officially launched lossless audio quality for the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV 4K.
The company confirmed during WWDC that unlike Dolby Atmos, it will make lossless quality streaming eventually available for its entire 75-million track catalog. At launch, there are about 20 million songs with lossless audio and only “thousands” of spatial audio tracks. However, Apple Music subscribers will not be able to experience lossless audio quality when using Apple AirPods wireless audio devices; a wired connection is required.
Subscribers will need to update to the latest OS then switch out from AAC to lossless in the Music tab in settings. Support for the HomePod and HomePod Mini are reportedly on the way with a future update.
It was previously revealed that the lossless streaming will use Apple’s ALAC codec (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) at a quality of up to 48kHz, while its Hi-Resolution Lossless will be increased to 192kHz.
Elsewhere in music, Kanye West’s manager teased that a new album entitled WestDayEver is on the way.
