Destination Crenshaw is well underway as Los Angeles’ Cultural Affairs Commission gave the green light for its first phases to begin.

The 1.3-mile arts center will feature permanent sculptural works by Kehinde Wiley, whose Obama Portraits will land at the Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art next month; along with specially made pieces by Melvin Edwards, Charles Dickson, Maren Hassinger, Brenna Youngblood, Artis Lane, and Alison Saar. Sankofa Park is one of the highlights of the project and will feature four of these sculptures — from a female iteration of Wiley’s Rumors of War, to Dickson’s totemic structure built with fiber optic cables that references both car culture and the mythic figureheads of West Africa.

Over the course of the next six years, 100 works from all creative levels will be featured in this historic art center that is backed by the likes of the Getty Foundation and star Chicago Bulls forward, DeMar Derozan, who grew up in the neighboring district of Compton.

Destination Crenshaw is slated to open to the public in the Fall of 2022.

Elsewhere in art, Triennale Milano has opened a new exhibition on the late-cartoonist, Saul Steinberg.
