Sonos Launches Its Own Streaming Service with Artist-Curated Radio Stations
‘Sonos Radio’ features stations by Thom Yorke, David Byrne and Jack White’s Third Man Records.
Sonos has always offered an in-app interface to control their speakers’ multi-room audio capabilities, but now the company is moving forward with its own 24-hour streaming service, Sonos Radio. The new offering will now be the first thing you see on the Sonos mobile app before you add in your other steaming platforms and it has quite a lot to offer.
Sonos Radio is a free, ad-supported service exclusively for those who own Sonos speakers. It includes 60,000+ radio stations from around the world and is amplified by original programming from handpicked DJs, artists and curators. Ad-free stations also compliment the experience for artists like Thom Yorke, highlighting his discography and his influences. Sonos’ own signature ad-free station will offer original content like behind-the-scenes stories and guest radio hours from Angel Olsen, JPEGMAFIA, Phoebe Bridgers, Jamila Woods, Soccer Mommy, Vegyn and many more.
Thom Yorke said of his new In the Absence Thereof… station: “Here, in a new form is that ever rolling compilation/ office chart habit of mine of putting together what I have found recently that fascinates or moves me, what obsesses me, challenges me, opens new doors, reminds me of what I might have forgotten, is insanely complex or elegantly simple, violent, messy, heavy or light. whatever has hit me over the head basically. It may be new or old or just dug up again. With all this time we have behind doors I hope this provides a welcome connection and escape… and perhaps stops the walls closing in quite so quick.”
David Byrne, Brittany Howard and Jack White‘s Third Man Records will also join Yorke with their own individual stations. Sonos Radio is currently available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia.
Elsewhere in music, Westside Gunn spoke to HYPEBEAST about his latest album, Pray For Paris.
