'Gears of War' Is Getting a Card Game From 'Magic: The Gathering' Designer
Apparently a “story-driven campaign style game.”

Fans of the Gears of War franchise will be delighted to learn that it’s now getting its very own digital card game.
Aptly named Gears of War: The Card Game, the new title’s engine is built by none other than veteran Magic: The Gathering designer Tyler Bielman, who has worked in partnership with Steamforged Games. Despite having the usual mechanics you’d see in a card game, such as picking and drawing your cards and customizing your own deck, it’s said to have a campaign element to it: “In this story-driven campaign-style game, the decisions you make in each narrative scenario will have serious consequences on the battlefield in those that follow,” reads the description. “Strike at the right moment, making your cards work together, fight together, and stand together – and, if necessary, die together.” Players can pick between both the Coalition and Locust Horde, and your wins or losses will directly affect the narrative path you follow, similar to an RPG.
There’s currently no official release date for Gears of War: The Card Game except “later this year,” but Steamforged will be unveiling and demoing the title at the Gears 5 Esports Mexico City Major, so expect to learn more then.
Elsewhere in gaming, Microsoft, Ubisoft and others have now announced alternative plans after E3’s cancellation.
