Billie Eilish has shared her newest single, “Therefore I Am.”
Clocking in at just under three minutes, the new track hears the GRAMMY winner address those who unnecessarily criticize her for everything outside of music. With lines like “Get my pretty name out of your mouth” and “Don’t talk ’bout me like how you might know how I feel/Top of the world, but your world isn’t real,” we hear a more aggressive side of Eilish that’s more than warranted. She admits to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that even though the song is “a little mean,” she absolutely loves it.
“It was very fun to complete. It was fun to record, especially because it’s like … I feel like you can hear it. I feel that I sound very much like … I’m just f*cking around. I’m just joking and … You know that?” she said. “Like, stop. What the hell are you talking about? It’s like, come on. It’s so real. I feel like a natural, and don’t take me seriously, you know? I love it.”
The track also arrives with an accompanying visual directed by Eilish and shot on an iPhone, which shows her running around an empty mall and grabbing food to her heart’s content. “The video is just the way that the song feels to me of just kind of like careless and not really trying,” she explained. “It’s basically me running through the empty Glendale Galleria eating a donut and a pretzel. That’s literally it. But like random, chaotic, don’t care sh*t. And it was so fun.”
