Katsuhiro Otomo Announces New 'Akira' Anime Series & 4K Remaster of 1988 Original
Returning to Neo-Tokyo.
During his panel at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, famed Japanese manga artist, screenwriter and film director Katsuhiro Otomo announced a new anime series for his iconic Akira manga.
Set to be produced by Sunrise, the project will cover the full manga story and animate some key points that were not featured in the 1988 original feature film. Following the announcement, a short teaser was presented at the panel with Sunrise President and CEO Makoto Asanuma apologizing for the brief teaser as the team is currently hard at work on the series.
Additionally, Otomo took the opportunity to announce the upcoming release of a 4K remaster of his iconic film. The 4K remaster of the 1988 original film is set to arrive in Japan first next Spring.
