The fan-favorite villain gets the standalone treatment.

Following the release of its poster yesterday, a new teaser trailer for director Todd Phillips and actor Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker movie has surfaced. Phoenix dons the clown make-up as the titular character, but instead of delving into his experiences in the comics, the film will focus on a comedian’s eventual transformation into the Clown Prince of Crime.

Although details of the plot are scarce, many are describing it as a film similar to Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, two Martin Scorsese films starring Robert De Niro, who also co-stars in this film. This film will not follow the same Joker as played by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad or even Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.

This will be separate from the current string of DC Comics films based in the same movie universe and will serve as its own standalone film. In that sense, many are comparing its serious tone and isolation from tie-in to Logan.

Check out the footage above and catch Joker when it debuts October 4 with co-stars Zazie Beetz and Marc Maron.
